Ultra-Low-Field MRI (Hyperfine Swoop)

The UConn Brain Imaging Research Core (BIRC) houses a Hyperfine Swoop portable ultra-low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system for brain imaging research.

Unlike conventional high-field MRI scanners, the Swoop system operates at a magnetic field strength of 0.064 Tesla (64 mT). Its compact, portable design enables brain imaging in environments where conventional MRI systems may be less practical. The system uses a permanent magnet and does not require cryogenic helium cooling or a conventional dedicated RF-shielded MRI room.

The Swoop system offers opportunities to investigate portable neuroimaging, ultra-low-field image acquisition, and the feasibility of brain imaging across different research settings.

System features include:

  • Portable ultra-low-field MRI system designed for brain imaging
  • 0.064 Tesla (64 mT) permanent magnet
  • Non-invasive acquisition of structural brain images
  • Compact design with reduced infrastructure requirements compared with conventional high-field MRI
  • Potential applications in neuroimaging methodology development and research involving portable MRI

Hyperfine MRI Training

Researchers interested in using the Hyperfine Swoop system should complete the BIRC Hyperfine MRI Training Request Form. BIRC staff will contact applicants to discuss equipment access, training requirements, and study-specific procedures.

Training and authorization requirements will be established according to BIRC operating procedures and the manufacturer's recommendations. Researchers should not operate the system independently until the required training and authorization have been completed.

Hyperfine MRI Safety and Screening

Although the Swoop system operates at a substantially lower magnetic field strength than conventional MRI scanners, MRI safety precautions and participant screening remain essential.

Before scanning, researchers must follow the applicable manufacturer instructions and BIRC-approved safety procedures. Screening should address implanted medical devices, metallic foreign bodies, and other potential MRI-related contraindications.

Only authorized personnel should operate the system. Any questions regarding participant eligibility, equipment compatibility, or safety requirements should be resolved before scanning.
